Motivation in sport training and success is critical. Motivation is the basis for an athlete to use their other skills and talents to achieve success. None of those attributes can individually contribute more to your success than motivation.

Motivation allows athletes to keep going and achieve even more success. It is the thing that gives you perseverance and persistence. Without the motivation to succeed and excel, raw, natural talent is wasted. And no athlete is truly committed to his or her sport or activity without being motivated.

Sometimes motivation in sport training comes from external sources—the encouragement of a coach or mentor, a financial bonus for performance results, the camaraderie of working with a successful team, or even the promise of a reward if a particular goal is reached.

More effective, however, is the motivation in sport achievement or accomplishment that comes from inside each athlete or aspiring athlete. Athletes that have a specific target they are aiming for can generate an amazing motivation from within. It doesn’t require anyone other than you, yourself, believing in and aspiring to do your best and to push yourself. You don’t have to go anywhere to find it, and you don’t have to ask for it. It is always there. It is always with you. And it is far stronger than any external motivating factor can be.

Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation for sport. There will always be winners and losers in sport. They will have wins and they will have losses. On the bad days, or when the losses occur, even the most motivated athletes and players can become discouraged.

But like your body’s muscles, your mental and motivation skills will be strongest when you regularly exercise them and practice working them. As you golfer can learn to putt through drills and coaching, a sports person can learn to motivate themselves.

A good motivational coach can help you set realistic and progressively higher yet achievable goals—while also pushing yourself to maximize your potential. A Mental Skills Coach will also help you to learn from previous challenges so that the lessons learnt provide a basis for success.

Regardless of what sport you play—or aspire to play—or compete at—if you want to achieve greatness, you need to believe you can achieve it! Motivation is the key to success!
