You may have spent a great deal of time choosing the best recurve or compound bow most suitable for your needs but have you considered the type of arrows to use with it? Choosing the correct arrow type is critical to your success and must match your bow correctly and be fitting for how you will be using it. Are you going to be using the bow principally for hunting, competitions or target practise? What are the different types of construction materials and which ones are best for you?

Wood Arrows

The traditional material for arrows is, of course wood, but nowadays wood arrows are used only in longbow competitions and by novices. They are not popular for other uses as they do not give uniform results due to slight differences in the weight and shape of the arrows. These types of arrows can break easily and can warp although they are economical and may be good to practise with if you are a beginner.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are consistent as they are manufactured to be more uniform, however, they break easily as they are brittle. They are suitable for hunting and are easily fitted to different draw lengths.

Aluminium Arrows

Arrows manufactured from aluminum are a lot stronger than either fiberglass or wooden arrows. They are reliable and consistent in use.They can be bought in a wide variety of sizes and types so you will be able to find one correct for your style and bow. Their consistency and reliability make them a good choice for hunting and for tournaments and they are also made with arrowheads that are interchangeable. They are more expensive than fiberglass or wooden arrows so may not be a good idea of you are still losing a lot of arrows. Cheaper arrows would be a better choice until your skills improve!

Carbon Arrows

Carbon arrows are the choice of serious archers because they are efficient and durable and can achieve a high speed. They are made with an aluminium core surrounded by a carbon composite shell and are extremely resilient so won’t easily break as fiberglass arrows can do. They are undoubtedly the best arrows available but they are high-priced so are usually used by serious archers only.

Other Things to Consider

Fletches nowadays are generally manufactured from synthetic materials although traditional feather fletches are available. Fletches are important to impart stability to the arrow during flight and helps to increase speed. Have a go with different types to see what feels the best for you. You also need to consider the point. A specially made point for hunting, for example, is needed. Lastly, protect your arrows with a quiver and carry spare draw strings with you.
