Cairns, Australia is a popular dive travel location with arguably the best Great Barrier Reef diving and snorkeling available .Hundreds of tourists are ferried out daily by the giant catamarans to snorkel and scuba dive the various local reefs and join in the many underwater attractions on offer.
Agincourt Ribbon Reefs.
Two permanently moored pontoons, owned by Quicksilver Cruises, are moored on the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs, allowing access to numerous excellent scuba sites.The platforms are very well organised and safety proceedures for snorkeling and scuba diving are among the highest in the industry. The Channels offer breathtaking swim-thru’s and caves, while The Gardens are famous for their exceptional abundance of brightly-coloured reef fish.Blue Wonder is a breathtaking drift dive to beyond 40 m, while Nursery Bommie is a awe inspiring bommie where pelagic species school to feed.
Saxon Reef.
Saxon Reef offers many great diving and snorkelling locations. The shallows shelter a host of all the usual reef fish; typical are anemonefish, pufferfish, damsels and butterflyfish. Dropping to 30 m are a number of walls, broken up by caves and gutters, which are covered with a great selection of coral and other undersea invertebrates. These are good places to see turtles, reef sharks and schools of spanish mackeral.
Broken Patches.
The pinnacles of Broken Patches, varying in depth from 10 to 25 m are covered with colourful corals and thousands of reef fish. A location known as Paradise Reef is the perfect place to see large pelagic fish and reef sharks.
Michaelmas Reef.
Similar to many reefs in the area, Michaelmas Reef has healthy coral gardens and a fewpinnacles. The pinnacles, regularly visited by pelagic fish and crowded with soft corals and gorgonians, offer the best diving.
Thetford Reef.
Macro-photographers will find large numbers of nudibranchs, tubeworms, anemonefish, brightly-coloured reef fish and pretty corals as subject matter in the coral gardens on this location.
Moore Reef.
Moore Reef has lots of beautiful soft coral gardens that are worth a visit, but the ultimate diving is along the reef drop-off. Here a selection of gorgonians, sea whips and soft corals cling to the wall to depths of 30m. A multitude of reef and pelagic fish live in the area.
Sudbury Reef.
Shallow coral gardens and walls to 35 m can be found on Sudbury Reef. Reef fish are everywhere. It is also possible to see green turtles and Queensland gropers.
