Detroit is really a sports city. It is not that the city of Detroit likes their sports teams, the city of Detroit lives and dies by their sports terms. And while the city adores the Tigers, Lions and Pistons, you might argue that the biggest team in town is the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Although it might appear ridiculous that a hockey team is the most beloved sports team in town, they don’t call Detroit “Hockey Town” for nothing.
When you walk throughout the city, you notice that you are bound to find a Detroit Red Wings t-shirts in every shop, restaurant and city bus. Over the last twenty years or so the Red Wings have been one of the league’s most successful teams. But before you think that these are all fair-weather fans, these fans were just as intense as during their decades-long Championship drought also.
So why do the Detroit Red Wings rule Detroit? As it comes down to it, it is a combination of the cities lust for hockey, and the fact that the Red Wings happen to be one of the more reliable teams the city has ever had. Since 1996 the Red Wings have won four Stanley Cups and made it into the finals another two times. The rest of the city’s three major sports teams? Only one title in that time (the 2004 Pistons), and one other visit to the finals (2006 Tigers).
But the fascination with the Detroit Red Wings is all about more than numbers, it is more about longevity. The team has been around for longer than 85 years, which means that generations have passed on the love of the Wings and a Detroit Red Wings jerseys to their children.
Ironically, the Red Wings play their home games at the Joe Louis Arena, which is arguably one of the worst venues in all of sports (i.e. the oldest and most outdated). With that said, there’s a charm to the arena and a sense of “classic hockey” that you simply do not get form many of the new “mega” arenas.
Whether you wear a Detroit Red Wings jersey, and bring an octopus, to the hockey game, you may expect a great experience with several of hockey’s most intense, intelligent fans. While it might not have the glitz and the services of other arenas in town, it’s arguably on the list of the city’s best sports landmarks, similar to Madison Square Garden in New York, or Soldier Field in Chicago.
If you’re a hockey fan and are looking to purchase a Detroit Red Wings apparel, you undoubtedly already have decided whether you want the home red’s or the road white’s jersey, as well as whether you would like it personalized or not. Obviously, chances are you’ve also noticed precisely how expensive hockey jerseys tend to be.
The good thing is that if you are looking to save some money on hockey jerseys, you’ve got a great deal of options on the Internet. It’s not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars to show your Red Wings love, you can get one that shows off your pride for a lot less.
