If your truck or sport utility vehicle meets the necessary requirements for hauling a load as well as bearing excess weight, a cycle carrier is a better choice that the alternative methods. An anti-tilt feature found on select cycle carriers locks the motorcycle into place so that it does not rock on the platform as the vehicle drives down the road. Cycle carriers are compatible with most two-wheeled vehicles. Some, depending on the carrier, may be used to haul smaller sport vehicles. Due to the weight of the carrier and motorcycle together, a Class III or greater trailer hitch is necessary. This frame-mounted or pre-existing accessory is capable of supporting up to 225 kg. Class IV hitches can support 450 kg. In addition to the hitch, the vehicle must be able to safely haul a load. Cycle carriers are, for this reason, limited to trucks and select SUVs. Never use a cycle carrier in conjunction with a hitch adapter, and the device may not be attached to the rear of a fifth wheel or camping trailer.

Cycle carriers are themselves rated to carry a certain amount of weight, so check the weight of your bike as well as the hauling vehicle’s carrying capacity to be sure all components are compatible with each other.
