Steroids in Baseball – The Side Effects

A number of controversies are surrounding sports every now and then. Same is the case for baseball. One of these controversies is using steroids in baseball. Often we hear that a player was on steroids but most of us don’t know actually what a steroid is and its side effects.

The synthetic male form of hormone testosterone is known as steroids. The hormone responsible for the growth and the development of muscles is testosterone. One can achieve a lot if this hormone is mixed with steroids such as increase the muscle mass, reduction in body fat, increase in the ability to endure and a lot more.

There are a number of reasons as to why baseball athletes want to have steroids. The major reason is that they believe they have an edge over other players and can help team win. They believe that they can hit harder and as further as possible due to intake of steroids.

Although steroids may be an advantage, but it has a number of side effects for both physical and psychological. Looking at psychological effects, baseball athlete is known to different types of moods from having the mood of well being to as far as being in depression. Also, it is said the mood switches from one to another quickly. Physically, steroids can increase the ability to endure or increase muscle mass but on the worst side it is known to damage liver, can cause cancer, excessive hair loss or growth, acne problem, testicular atrophy and much more.

Athletes, nowadays, believe that steroids not only make them stronger but it is a path leading to fame and success but little do they think about its side effect. The side effects of steroids can lead to permanent disability. Thus, it is common to question whether steroids use is worth it or not considering its reward and risks. In long run, steroids will prove to be harmful for athletes.

Many legendary baseball players have been surrounded by steroids controversies but no proof has come up to prove that steroids have been used by these players. Take for example Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Mark Mcwire and many others who have been surrounded by baseball and steroids controversies. Barry Bonds was accused of using steroids to set a record number of home runs in one season. He was accused of being provided steroids by his long time friend. The question that many raised was whether it was the use of steroids or that Barry had a dream season?

Until there is no proof one cannot say whether an athlete has used steroids or not. Whether using or not, an athlete still has to face the ball and hit it to get runs.

Although steroids in baseball gives you instant strength and might lead to fame but in the long run, no matter what, it can lead to many risks to athletes health and provide damage physically. Baseball athletes should not use it as it is not worth it. Play the game with honor and fun without harming one’s health.
