The game of table tennis has pretty much the same rules as regular tennis. If you spent a lot of time watching sports on TV, then it is quite probable that you have watched at least a couple of table tennis games.

Unlike the full version game of tennis, table tennis, or what is commonly known as ping-pong, is played on a wooden table that is normally green in color, but occasionally blue. Instead of using full-size tennis rackets to play the game, small paddles with surfaces made out of rubber are used to bat a small plastic ball back and forth across the table just like tennis.

Over the years table tennis is becoming increasingly more and more popular. This is because the game is very easy to learn how to play,  it is very fun, and it doesn’t take very much room to hold a table. The space requirements for small, as you can set one up your garage, which is a big advantage over regular tennis.

Simply having a ping-pong table and some paddles is enough to play the game, you don’t need to go out and buy a bunch of fancy and expensive equipment to play. The only thing that requires some investment capital per se, is the cost of the table. This is a lot though when you compare it to the cost of other sports. After you have the table all you need is a set of paddles and some balls and you’re ready to go.

Table Tennis History

Table tennis draws its origins from the 1800s when some really rich Victorians from England were trying to figure out a sport which they could play inside. These affluent Englanders came up with the idea from watching tennis, and started out by making some paddles on the lids of some cigarette boxes and a ball made of twine. They just used a normal table for a table and the craze began.

The 1900′s soon came and with the growing popularity of the game, table tennis manufacturers started making vast improvements on table tennis tables and started making them to sell. The paddles and balls were also improved along with the tables. They started adding a rubber face on the paddles which help to slow the game down and they improved the ball structure so that they were rounder and bounced better.

As the game became increasingly more popular, and the commerciality of it grew, more and more people were able to play and enjoy the game. In the year 1902, the first table tennis tournament was held in which people are allowed to compete, and around the year 1930 the first world championship table tennis tournament was played. That tournament was held in England.

With the test of time, the game has become a universal rage that has survived generations. It has become a lasting pasttime for friends and family to love and enjoy as well a burning fad for those who love to compete. All of this adds up to a lot of fun time with friends and family and a good reason to get together and fellowship.
