Most high-schoolers who love basketball have dreamed of making a game winning shot. Making a perfect three pointer with three seconds left in the game to win the game would be a dream come true. Maybe you can’t make that happen, but you can give your high-schooler a great hoop to practice on and build the skills needed to be a good player and teammate.

By high school, your teenager has already learned most of the skills necessary to be a good basketball player. They just need a place to practice that is age appropriate. A quality, durable basketball hoop can help build their confidence and give them a place to play with friends and hone their skills. Having this place at your home, can give you added peace of mind.

If you don’t have a dedicated space that you can give to a basketball hoop, a portable hoop is what you need. A portable hoop can be moved as needed. Most portable hoops can be easily pushed up or down the driveway. Your high-schooler can practice in the driveway, the backyard or the street with ease.

Portable hoops are great because they are all weather approved. Many portable hoops fold down so they can be moved into a garage or storage area. When using a portable hoop, remember not to leave it in the street or to block the sidewalk. Common courtesy for your neighbors will be appreciated. Portable hoops come in adjustable and fixed height, but for high-schoolers a fixed height hoop works best. This way they can practice at the same height all the time and transfer what they have practiced to the game court.

If you do have room to accommodate a permanent space for your hoop, consider a wall mounted backboard with a goal. These units can be mounted to the side of a house or garage. You won’t have to worry about any poles, just mount the backboard in the desired spot and let the fun begin. Your high-schooler will love practicing and hanging out with friends around the hoop.

Most wall mounted units come with your choice of backboard and goal. Backboards range from large to small and are made from a variety of different materials. Glass backboards are used in many high school gymnasiums and in the NBA, but acrylic and steel backboards work well for practice. Goals come in flex or fixed. Flex goals are great for high-schoolers since they will want to attempt some classic slam dunks.

If you want to give your high-schooler the exact regulation details that are a part of all high school games, there are some things to know. You will need to set up your goal so the rim is 10 feet above the ground. Regulation backboards are 72” x 42” and rims must be 18” in diameter. Whether you are aiming for an authentic experience or just a fun place to practice, your high-schooler will appreciate having a place to practice that is all his own.
